Shorten State on Leads

Attempting to shorten our States on Leads from the long form to the 2 digit using the Modify Module. I have this formula but it's returning the error "There seems to be a problem with the formula syntax, please check it over and try again."

StateMatchShortName({State}, true)

I've also tried it this way

StateMatchShortName({$State}, true)
