Best way to match against Contact object for the highest rate of single matches?

Would like to know how to maximize the accuracy of a match against Contacts.

You'll want to make sure that your criteria are very specific - exact matches on Name (Or first name match on first name and Last Name exact match), Exact matches on Email, and throw in Account Name criteria, too. Those are the three things that yield the best results for me.

Using email address is the best way to start finding those easier duplicates. Showing the account name along with contact information also helps so you can see if you have the duplicates on different accounts. Then have to figure out what is the most recent information for your merge.

there is one issue using only email address. if there are generic emails, for example, president@'xxx'.edu or others, you could have multiple returns (for example, an executive assistant could have that email address as well as they monitor that email box). for first matches, i use account name, first name, last name and email (and click the blank checkbox), all exact matches...then take the unmatched file and get into the fuzzier matching scenarios.
